1-Methylcyclopropene delays tomato fruit ripening Horticultura Brasileira
Moretti,Celso Luiz; Araújo,Alessandra L.; Marouelli,Waldir Aparecido; Silva,Washington Luiz C..
Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) fruits, cv. Santa Clara, were harvested at the breaker stage from commercial fields in Brazlândia, Brazil, to investigate the ability of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) to retard tomato fruit ripening. Fruit without external blemishes were graded for size (diameter = 80±5 mm) and mass (m = 130±10 g), placed inside hermetically sealed boxes, and 1-MCP was applied for 12 hours (T = 22±1°C; RH = 80-85%) at four different concentrations: 0 (control), 250, 500 and 1000 mL.L-1. Fruits were held at ambient conditions (T = 23±2°C; RH 80-85%) for 2 days and then stored inside a cold room (T = 20±1°C; RH = 85-95%). Every 3 days, during a 15-day period, fruits were analyzed for firmness, total soluble solids, titratable acidity,...

Agronomic biofortification of carrot with selenium Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Oliveira,Vanuze Costa de; Faquin,Valdemar; Guimarães,Karina Carvalho; Andrade,Fabrício Ribeiro; Pereira,Joelma; Guilherme,Luiz Roberto Guimarães.
ABSTRACT The selenium (Se) is essential for human metabolism, but a large part of the world’s population has deficiency in this element. This can be reversed by the consumption of biofortified foods, given that plants can efficiently act in controlling excessive and/or accidental consumption of an element that can occur in humans through the use of dietary supplements. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different application forms and sources of Se in the growth, production, nutrition, physical-chemical characteristics, content and accumulation of Se in carrots. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions, using pots containing 4 dm3 of Red-yellow Latosol. A completely randomized design was used in a 2x2x2 factorial...

Atrazine and Mesotrione-Induced Oxidative Stress and Impact on Antioxidant Enzymes and Chlorophyll Contents in Bermudagrass Planta Daninha
WANG,Y.; YU,J.; ZHOU,B.; SAPKOTA,S.; WEI,F.; WANG,Z..
ABSTRACT: The effect of atrazine, mesotrione, and joint activity of atrazine plus mesotrione on pigment, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant enzyme activity was studied. Atrazine and mesotrione treatments significantly reduced chlorophyll a (Chl a), chlorophyll b (Chl b), carotenoid concentrations, and protein content in bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.) plants, whereas they significantly enhanced lipid peroxidation. The treatment of atrazine plus mesotrione caused greater phototoxic effect on bermudagrass than either herbicide alone, which was evident from the significantly decreased membrane stability noted as a function of the enhanced singlet oxygen and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents, as well as from the greater reduction in Chl a, Chl b, and...

Critical review: cholesterol and fat-soluble vitamins on shrimp feeding Sci. Agrar.Paran. / SAP
Lima, Rodrigo Barbosa; Figueiredo-Lima, Denise Fontana.
Four types of poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are essential for all shrimp species, linoleic (LOA, 18:2n-6), alfa-linolenic (ALA, 18:3n-3), eicosapentaenoic (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic (DHA, 22:6n-3) acids. Moreover, the arachidonic acid (ARA, 20:4n-6), even when present, seems to be, in crustaceans, not so important or yet dispensable. It is relevant knowing that cholesterol as much as PUFA are not well absorbed when not followed by a substantial amount of lecithin, reaching 5% of the ration. The sum of PUFA reaches around 3% of the diet, even varying according to the species, stage and ration type. For Penaeus monodon a complex mathematic model was formulated in order to describe the relationships between the requirements of the cited PUFA....
